Look Out…eNom E-mail Phishers About

Today, I received a series of phishing e-mails claiming to be from eNom Tech Support explaining that a third party complaint has been received of invalid domain information and the domain was canceled and subsequently purchased by another party. A simple mouse over the enom.com url displays the real address being enom.com.com92.biz at which address I’m sure any sensitive information inputted would be used to hijack your domain. I also believe there is a Network Solution phishing e-mail circulating too so be careful. This is just a warning to always check the URL contained within such e-mails as a lapse in concentration could cause you a lot of upset and unnecessary headaches.

Essential Tips: Expansion and Thinking Outside The Box

As an Internet entrepreneur, methods of constantly improving and expanding your site(s) and portfolio should be a regular routine which, if accomplished successfully, may lead to great benefits. It is encouraged to always think outside the box when planning methods of improvement and expansion. I’m sure many of you are confused as to what is meant by thinking outside the box so it shall be demonstrated using an example.

If you run a celebrity image forum which allows users to post celebrity images it may be possible to improve and expand by optimising designs and adding related forums (i.e. Internal to your site). These are some of the options you may feel are available to you. It is encouraged to change from the conventional methods of thinking and look beyond the four walls of your site for expansion. In this example, it may be possible to look at developing related celebrity blog(s) which will allow your portfolio to expand with little effort as you are already putting in the effort of posting to your forum. A simple copy/paste on one or multiple blogs of the content would offer an exponential reward in relation to the amount of work required. You may even look at purchasing similar sites if they would benefit and complement your existing portfolio. This is known as lateral expansion.

In addition to lateral expansion it may be possible to expand vertically. In the above example, vertical expansion would involve the development or acquisition of an image hosting site or a celebrity stock photos site which is the source of the celebrity images like WireImage.com. This form of expansion offers security as you have control of the source of the images and also control over the images being displayed via an image host as the usage of third party image hosts like Imagevenue.com does not offer any guarantees that the images will remain active on the servers. Review: The Planet Dedicated Server (Bargain Bin)

The dedicated server market is a crowded and competitive one with many companies to choose from offering different packages and server specifications. The Planet, based in Houston and Dallas, are currently running dedicated server specials with some servers being sold within the Bargain Bin at under $50/month.

The inventory is updated daily and often multiple times a day with the sub $50 servers usually selling within a few minutes of being placed online. By chance, whilst browsing the Bargain Bin last Friday I noticed a few servers at below the $50 a month price point (see screenshot). I decided to try one of these servers out so I chose the Intel P4 Celeron 2.4 GHz/80GB 7200RPM IDE/512 MB RAM/750 GB Bandwidth per month at $41.83/month. GreatDomains Premium Domain Auction Event - Closing Results - October 23rd 2008

The GreatDomains Premium Domain Auction Event which has been covered on Internetuals over the past week has now come to an end with many domains not meeting the reserve prices like RSS.com and Mag.com and some domains exceeding expectations by not only meeting the reserves but selling way over estimates like adel.com and singing.net. Although the auction had no huge $500,000+ sales which was the region within which the RSS.com reserve was, there was still plenty of bidding activity despite the current global economic state with the one word .net domains doing surprisingly well in the auction. Mag.com which closed suspiciously close to the $50,000 - $99,000 reserve region at $49,000 was the highest bid domain and RSS.com closed at a disappointing low-mid $xx,xxx, nowhere near the reserve price. Adel.com was the one of the surprises of the auction fetching a mighty $7,301 whilst the reserve was set at a modest $500 - $999. Storming.com which I discussed in the last blog entry as being a domain to look out for sold at $1,551 due to a flurry of last minute bidding activity jumping from $441 with moments remaining until the closure of the auction.

The results show a healthy market for one word .net domains and some good domain sales. The lack of interest in the big domains like RSS.com and Mag.com may be an indicator that the current economy has had an impact on the top end domains but all in all the auction provided some solid sales.

Experiment: Google AdSense on a Forum

It is widely known that monetizing a forum is difficult because, although your forum may be popular and receive lots of traffic, the majority of this traffic is repeat visitors and the click through rates (CTR) are relatively low for forum communities.

A number of options are available to forum owners for monetization and one of these includes placing Google AdSense advertising on the forum. I shall experiment the placement of Google AdSense on a celebrity image forum and analyse the earnings for the forum community which has over 14,000 members and receives thousands of visitors weekly.

The AWStats display the traffic to the forum site which is around 30,000 uniques per month consistently with about twice as many visits to the site which shows the forum has many repeat visitors. I would like to reiterate that this is a celebrity image forum and results on your forum in a different niche will vary and no guarantees are made that these trends and results will be identical for your site.

Prior to the placement of Google AdSense advertising, research was done to find information on the optimal placement of the advertising blocks on forums for the highest click-throughs and ultimately highest earnings. The AdSense Blog contains a post containing Six AdSense optimization tips for forums which is useful in your choice for AdSense placement.

The AdSense advertising was placed on the index page as well as the forum itself and the placement of the advertising blocks is outlined in the diagrams below:

The content of the AdSense advertising was well targeted on the Index page and, although less relevant on the forum pages, overall the advertising was quite related to the subject matter of the site.

Results

The AdSense earnings for the three blocks on the Index page are displayed with the relevant information removed to comply with the Google AdSense terms and conditions. The right column displays the earnings and the column beside this displays the impressions. Overall the 468×60 banner was the most successful with regards to earnings although the Click Through Rates (CTR) were pretty poor overall and AdSense seemed to underperform in general as the results were poor. The average Earnings Per Click (EPC) was low as expected in the site niche. With a little optimisation and advertising placement changes it is possible to increase the number of clicks but despite this the

The AdSense earnings for the 728×90 Leaderboard on the Forum pages are displayed again with the relevant information removed to comply with the Google AdSense terms and conditions. The impressions are considerably higher than that of the Index page as expected but the earnings are very poor considering the number of impressions with only a handful of clicks over the course of experiment. Combining the low CTR with the low EPC made for an overall poor experience of placing Google AdSense on this forum. The spike in earnings on Tuesday October 21st 2008 is strange as the number of clicks weren’t very different to previous trends.

Conclusion

Despite predictions that the earnings via AdSense on a forum would be low, especially in the category experimented, it was not possible to predict that a site generating this many visitors daily would produce such low daily earnings. Although the AdSense block placement could have been changed and optimised, the overall experience with Google AdSense on the forum itself was a poor one with low Earnings Per Click (EPC) which were not helped by the very low Click Through Rate (CTR) and eCPM.
